Ventura Pier and Promenade

Ventura, CA

This small, relaxing beach town is the perfect place to slow down  when you need to take a break from reality. Wander the downtown area, taking your time peeking into thrift stores, ice cream shops and admiring historic buildings. Head to the pier or the harbor and admire the ocean views, maybe even take a boat to Channel Islands! Here are our top 5 things to do in Ventura:

  • A must do in Ventura is to visit the historic Ventura Pier and Promenade. Take a stroll down the long, wooden pier built in 1872. It’s a calm place to walk and watch the water. Maybe go fishing for the afternoon, or just take in the sunset.

  • If you appreciate California history, then the San Buenaventura Mission is a must, it’s a Spanish mission founded by Franciscan Father Junípero Serra in 1782. This mission has an interesting history, including attacks by pirates, an earthquake, tidal wave and fire.

  • Explore the Ventura Botanical Gardens. The gardens are free and there are plenty of walking trails to explore that offer vineyards, mountains, farmland and of course beautiful ocean views. The gardens have 160 species of plants that come mostly from the Mediterranean as well as pine and eucalyptus forests. It’s dog friendly too, so you can bring your pup!

  • Ventura Harbor Village is a quaint little seaside village that offers a range of  boutique shops, galleries, arcades, restaurants and cafes. If you’re lucky, you might catch some live music on a weekend night!  Take a stroll over to the harbor to look at the boats and take an Island Packer boat to tour the nearby Channel Islands.

  • Go for a bike ride! Take advantage of the gorgeous Ventura weather and ride your bike on the paved road, along the water, from Ventura to neighboring Ojai and take in all the amazing views along the way! Stop for some wine and beer tasting to reward yourself afterward.

  • Bonus: If you are visiting in August, be sure to check out the Ventura County Fair that happens right along the beach! Go on rides, taste local food, enjoy live entertainment, and most importantly, feel the cool ocean breeze from the top of the Ferris Wheel.
